Sid Szydelko – Composer
“ I do not know how to make a
distinction between tears and music”
Friedrich Nietzsche
Philosophy
From a very early age I have been intrigued by the unique language of music, my natural tendency being to deconstruct and reinterpret the music that I am exposed to. What is particularly interesting for me is the correlation between this language and how this is manifested viscerally, from cognition to emotion. Music is abstract, and for me that is it’s charm, expressed perfectly in the following quote :-
“The inexpressible depth of music, so easy to understand and yet so inexplicable, is due to the fact that it reproduces all the emotions of our innermost being, but entirely without reality and remote from its pain… Music expresses only the quintessence of life and its events, never these themselves.”
— Arthur Schopenhauer
Process
Though I have no particular starting point in the composition process, I would often begin by contriving a new approach or way of redesigning an established form. I like to draw from the avant-garde styles such as serialism and minimalism as well the traditional approach using motivic and thematic development in the context of romantic and jazz harmony. Working with film is a particular delight since the visuals dictate the parameters in which to work, this can catalyse creativity since the music doesn’t have to be tied to form, it can breathe its own life.
(Please see examples of the composition process of some of my works in the blog)
The guitar for me is the vehicle for composition, the place where most often the ideas begin life, after the initial ideas, the score is where I do most of the work, it is incredibly liberating since one is not limited to the physics of the guitar. Though I will often play solo parts such as piano and woodwind on midi guitar to maintain human feel. Using the award winning East West virtual instruments library gives me an excellent and vast palette from which to work.
Coda
My intention is to compose a library of music that embraces the comprehensive genres and styles but also that which has a distinctly unique perspective. Whether the music be an accompaniment to visuals or stand alone in its own right, my hope is that it will resonate with people on a profound level.
“Music begins where the possibilities of language end” – Jean Sibelius
